I was actually too shy to post this review, but my boyfriend encouraged me to leave it so others wouldn’t make the same mistake.
I booked an appointment online with Reo for highlights and a cut using a 20,000-yen coupon. The salon looked modern and the staff seemed friendly. They couldn’t speak English, but I had expected that, so I wrote down my requests and had them translated.
My hair was already bleached, with about 10 cm of regrowth. I wanted small highlights for a fresher look and a butterfly cut. I also asked about a Tokyo Inkarami Treatment, although it wasn’t listed on the website. According to everything I had read beforehand, it takes at least 1–1.5 hours, but I thought it couldn’t hurt to ask. I also explained that I wanted it because my bleached hair was damaged. Reo noted that my hair was thick, so I honestly told him I knew there might be a small surcharge despite the coupon. That was my second mistake. At other salons, I had only ever paid 1,000–3,000 yen extra for length, so I assumed that would be the maximum here.
Reo asked whether my previous color had included subtle highlights, and I said yes. Then the treatment began. Reo left and only occasionally checked in, while two nice girls, probably apprentices, did most of my hair.
I was confused because they used a completely different technique from what I knew: they first straightened my hair, took sections in their hands, blow-dried out the short, broken baby hairs, and then dyed almost EVERYTHING except a 1.5-cm-wide strip at the roots. I hoped this was simply a Japanese technique and trusted them. That was my biggest mistake.
In the end, apart from the baby hairs they had blown out, they bleached EVERYTHING—including already bleached lengths and ends—and left it for at least 30 minutes. At the same time, they left a 1–1.5 cm strip of roots unbleached, creating a very harsh transition.
After rinsing, shampooing, applying the color/matte finish, and shampooing again, they stood behind me at the sink, giggling, and said, “Now the Tokyo treatment begins.” They applied one more product, massaged it in for no more than two minutes, rinsed it out immediately, and took me back to the mirror. This definitely could not have been the Tokyo Inkarami Treatment I had asked for: it was far too short, with no processing time and apparently only one product.
They then quickly blow-dried my hair with hot air, straightened it, and curled it with a curling iron—without heat protection or hairspray or anything to hold the style. It was clearly just meant to last for the following 15-minute photo/video shoot for advertising. As soon as I left, the waves were gone and my hair was completely flat.
Then came the bill. It listed the Tokyo Treatment and other services, and I was told to pay 42,000 yen instead of just under 20,000 yen. I simply wanted to leave and still didn’t fully understand what had happened, so I pressed the Japanese-yen option on the card terminal. Despite that, the cashier selected the euro conversion on her side, and I suddenly had to pay around 45,000 yen instead of 42,000. I said nothing—another mistake—because I was alone and the situation was already extremely uncomfortable.
I left feeling deeply disappointed, both professionally and personally. I genuinely did not expect to be treated this way. It felt as though the focus was more on making money from a tourist than on providing professional care.
Now I’m genuinely worried about the long-term damage to my hair and hope it doesn’t break off. I also have to figure out what to do about the thick, unbleached roots, which will cost even more money to fix.
